I’ve always viewed markups as leakage in the consumer packaged goods industry Anyone with operating experience is familiar with the 4x rule - generally speaking, a product goes on the shelf at 4x the unit cost. This isn’t because brands are greedy, rather it subsidizes everything in between - distributor markups, retailer margin, trade spend, discounts, free-fills, etc…. At the end of the day, consumers just want premium products at a reasonable price.
