YC and dropout culture have convinced us the ideal founder is 22, straight out of school, but the data tells a different story. Some interesting data: - An MIT study of 2.7 million US founders found that the average founder was 47 when starting a company that later exited through an acquisition or IPO. - The same study cited that the founders of the fastest-growing 0.1% of U.S. startups were 45 years old on average when they started their companies. - A 50-year-old founder was approximately twice as likely as a 30-year-old founder to produce an acquisition or IPO. - Founders with at least three years of relevant industry experience were twice as likely to build a top-0.1%-growth company as founders with none. So it seems that experience is one of the strongest advantages a founder can have. Two lessons here: 1. It's never too late to start 2. It might actually be TOO early to start; getting work experience is worth consideringfrozen21d ago161K1.9K182155787461.89%
I’m currently on a flight to San Francisco, sitting in first class. I have an agent harness running while a swarm codes three projects at once while planning my itinerary in the valley. I noticed that those sitting in economy are still using the free chatGPT plan. Some of them are even watching Disney movies, unaware of the new world we live in. Big lesson to be learned here.frozen9d ago93K452924313830.86%
If you significantly leapfrog your close friends in income, you should never flaunt it. Instead, find subtle ways to settle the bill or give them a gift without making it obvious. It prevents jealousy or resentment. I was on the other side of this. Almost ten years ago, a friend of mine fell into a seven-figure windfall from his business. We traveled together and decided to take turns splitting Airbnbs, travel, meals, and I now realize that he likely put in 50-100% more but never made it a point of discussion. That is class.frozen22d ago73K6014822761.22%
If Anthropic and OpenAI hold their valuations through IPO, they mint ~10,000 new millionaires and ~4,000 decamillionaires within three years. That is tens of billions of dollars the newly minted rich will spend on clothes, cars, homes, art, furniture, events, watches, travel, and jewelry. Yet most brokers selling these goods and experiences today have boomer marketing, don't speak the language of tech, and don't understand how to sell to this very specific audience. If I were going to bet my career on one AI-proof category, it would be to pick one of these categories to sell, and go deep, and go personal.frozen23d ago68K4332024123321.21%

I've been in a physical rut the past few months. Busy with work, constant travel, skipping workouts and phoning it in when I did make it to the gym. This math concept has always blown my mind. It's called the Birthday Paradox. If you put 23 random people in a room, there's a 50% chance that two of them share the same birthday. With 50 people, that probability jumps to 97%. The reason? With 23 people, there are 253 possible pairs of people who could share a birthday. Our brains are surprisingly bad at understanding probability.frozen11d ago32K791113480.45%

San Francisco has a unique feature that no other city in the world has. And if you want to build an outlier career, this matters a lot. And I'm not talking about the concentration of tech companies. San Francisco is the one place in the world that you'll be taken seriously no matter who you are. It has an unusually low barrier to being taken seriously. In most places, if you're 20 years old, fresh out of school, and building something, people are naturally skeptical. In SF, that person in flip-flops and a hoodie might be building the next billion-dollar AI company. And that changes the status quo of how people treat each other. There's a culture of radical open-mindedness toward ambition. People are more willing to take the meeting, hear the idea, make the introduction, or give someone young and unproven a shot. You see this everywhere. Most of the power players in SF are easily accessible – they do office hours, coffee shops, speak at events, etc. So your age, title, pedigree, and resume matter a little less. And what you're building matters a little more. I've traveled to many startup ecosystems, and I haven't seen this norm as strongly anywhere else. If you're young, ambitious, or trying to do something that sounds a little crazy, that's one of San Francisco's biggest advantages.frozen3d ago16K265232811912.58%

Traveled to 14 cities internationally this year. I have never come across an AI tool (including Claude and ChatGPT) that can plan my travel well. Restaurant, cafe, coffee shop recs have a 50% hit rate. Sightseeing recs are always missing a minor detail (place is closed, require tickets, is insanely crowded, etc.) Hotel recs aren't great - they're never the hotels I'd actually end up staying in. Transport recs are decent. I think the human touch is still so important here. Has anyone actually had success using AI to plan an entire trip?frozen28d ago12K504373140.91%

12 years ago, @paulg published an essay on the importance of being kind. His point: to succeed in the startup world, you must not be mean. Mean people fail. His reasoning: 1. Mean people fight, and fighting is stupid. It's a poor use of your mental and physical resources. 2. Mean people have insufficient networks - they can't get the best people to work with them. 3. Mean people are usually extrinsically motivated while kinda people are intrinsically motivated. And the individuals who are motivated by more than money typically keep going longer than others. Loved this piece.frozen22d ago11K16412115772.51%
The CTO of Meta once told me to write at an 8th-grade reading level. I emailed him after reading his blog for years, and his advice to me was so simple: Write so that an 8th-grader could read it. There's even a free editor called Hemingway that grades your readability. The best way to share sophisticated ideas is through simple language. P.S. A Broadway actor once gave me a 6-minute warm-up routine that I now use before speaking in front of 100s of people. It's improved my public speaking ability and confidence by ~50% (if I had to guess). I've done it for the last two years. Here's the routine: 1. Wake up your face. Gently massage your face, jaw, and masseter muscles to release tension and loosen your facial muscles. 2. Stretch your body. Stretch your neck, mouth, and lips. Bend forward to touch your toes, then slowly roll back up to release tension throughout your body. 3. Get silly. Walk around the room, flail your arms, shake out your legs, and make the ugliest faces possible. The goal is to loosen up and stop feeling self-conscious. 4. Loosen your jaw. Gently move your jaw forward, backward, and side to side. Relax your mouth so your words come out more naturally. 5. Stretch your tongue. Stick your tongue out, reach it up, down, left, and right. This helps loosen your tongue for clearer articulation. 6. Practice projection and expression. Say the same sentence as if you're excited, angry, curious, or telling a secret. This builds vocal range and expressiveness. 7. Visualize your presence. Imagine your feet rooted into the ground and your energy extending to every corner of the room. This helps you feel grounded and confident. If you're wondering how it works, it does so by loosening your facial muscles, opening your vocal cords, and putting you into a confidence state. It's silly, but it works!frozen11d ago10K1180511983.07%

I visited the island where Cristiano Ronaldo grew up. He's the most followed person on Instagram (650M+), and in Madeira he's closer to a god than a celebrity. The airport is named after him. There's a museum of his trophies and a hotel with his initials on it. Every shop sells his jersey. But the part I didn't expect was how far he came to get here. (I met a local who rambled on about him) He was born in Funchal, Madeira, in one of the poorest neighborhoods. His father was a gardener who struggled with alcoholism and died of liver disease when Ronaldo was 20. His mother cleaned houses and cooked. When he finally became successful, he gave a lot back. He split a £450,000 Champions League bonus between three children's charities. He donated €165,000 to the cancer center in Madeira that treated his mother. He sold his 2013 Ballon d'Or and gave the £530,000 to Make-A-Wish. And he has no tattoos and doesn't drink or do drugs, because he donates blood and bone marrow and wants to stay eligible. I know he's a controversial figure but it was inspiring to hear all this from a local who grew up here, in the same neighborhood, watching it happen.frozen25d ago8.2K6505090.96%

Because some of the people who'd get the most out of this room are the ones least able to afford it. When I was a student, I had no idea there were paths beyond the 9 to 5. Nobody showed me that you could build a company, an audience, or a career on your own terms. I wish a room like this had existed back then. So we're opening the doors. Some of my friends took (significantly) lower paying jobs for the opportunity to work with an experienced founder. I think this is a smart move ... proximity is EVERYTHING. Another way to think about it: what is the lifetime value of building credibility with a highly accomplished leader? It can be tangible (e.g. they invest in your future company) or intangible (e.g. they make introductions, promote your work, invite you into their network). Friend of mine crushed it at series A company for a few years (did his "tour of duty") and when he left the founder backed him with $100K.frozen29d ago5.4K38151131.08%

I spent the last week in San Francisco meeting founders, CEOs, and people at the frontier of AI. Some observations I thought were worth sharing: 1. There’s a massive AI gold rush, and everyone knows. I met founders from London, Berlin, Croatia, and a dozen other countries who flew in to raise money and find customers. 2. Founders are raising venture capital to build personal brands on Instagram, TikTok, and LinkedIn. If the product fails, they can promote other products or become full-time creators. Career insurance. 3. AI influencers are PRINTING money. I heard of creators with 100,000 followers making $1M a year. AI companies have more cash than channels, and nearly every tech and career influencer I know has pivoted to AI. 4. AI companies are sponsoring billboards, buses, cafes, and crazy parties. AI marketing spend is insane right now. 5. But standing out has never been harder. There are 100 CRMs, 100 event planning tools, and 100 AI SDRs. When anyone can build the product, branding and storytelling decide the winner. 6. B2A (business to agents) is the new B2B. Marketers now create content and design products to sell to agents. Have you ever read a blog post meant for agents? It’s a little dystopian. 7. Many founders have a doomer AI mindset: pessimistic about the future, optimistic about their company. The people closest to the technology are often the most paranoid. 8. Company “aura” is a hot topic. CEOs are obsessed with making their companies sexy enough to attract top talent. With more missionaries than mercenaries, the founder’s vision matters more than ever. 9. I met so many people stuck in the abyss: wealthy enough to be choosy about their careers, not wealthy enough to stop working. Most are figuring out what’s next in the AI world. 10. Everyone is selling data. It’s not unusual to hear of a founder selling their company’s Slack data for half a million dollars. 11. Startup creation is becoming a factory: Y Combinator, HF0, Founders Inc. I visited a Founders Inc demo day that felt like a high school science fair, but with companies instead of volcanoes. Some founders were 16 and had already raised venture money. 12. Hacker houses are booming because founders want to compress time. At one, founders gave themselves six months to hit product-market fit. They eat, sleep, and work in the same house. 13. The gap between SF and everywhere else keeps widening. People here are more AI-pilled than ever, yet most people outside tech hubs have never heard of Instinct. 14. SF might be the only place where saying you work at Google makes people question your judgment. As in, why aren’t you building something? 15. The new flex is tiny teams. Gamma does $100M+ in revenue with 50 employees ($2M per employee). Five years ago, headcount was the flex. I love my trips to SF. Thank you to everyone who welcomed me and showed me around. Happy to be back home. See you soon!6h ago5.2K734153402.62%

Some of what was at the table: – A founder who sold two companies worth a combined $600M. Casual. – A founder who scaled to $20M+ ARR on a seed round alone. – A co-founder who says he built the first version of ChatGPT – A CEO who grew a startup from 0 to 200 people and raised $100M, then moved to NYC with 3 boys under 5. Hardest job at the table. – A founder who was on the founding team of a zoo – A VC who has owned 13 dogs – A CEO who once heard the spirit drum at an ayahuasca retreat. Strongly held belief: New York has the best talent pool in the world. Some of you are thinking, "Over San Francisco? You're crazy." Realized this after hosting hundreds of events in NYC and spending the last year flying to SF monthly to host dinners. There's a massive difference between the talent in SF and New York. In SF, everyone seems to work in tech. Walk into one room and you're probably two degrees away from almost anyone you want to meet. Even your Uber driver might try to network with you (true story). NYC is different. We have incredible talent across tech, finance, media, art, music, fashion, and dozens of other industries. At almost every dinner I host, I meet someone who's built something remarkable I've never heard of. The problem? These people are incredibly hard to find because their networks rarely overlap. So we brute force it. People attend multiple events a day, hoping to meet the right people. I call this circuit networking. But AI is changing that. I can now organize my SF dinners from NYC with @HappenstanceAI I connect my accounts, describe exactly who I want in the room, and it searches my network and my friends' networks to find people I'd forgotten about or never knew existed. Imagine doing that across NYC's entire talent pool. Which is why I'd bet on New York for the next ten years. SF has made its talent easy to find. AI could do the same for New York.frozen15d ago4.0K1926470.94%

I love this new kind of nightlife. Third spaces are popping up in LA, usually large, cozy, hygge-coded spaces where people listen to live jazz, lounge on floor cushions, and do activities like painting, reading, or journalling. The optimal place to be alone, together. The founder said she opened it because she wanted to lounge, listen to jazz, and journal at night, instead of dressing up and getting hit on. She calls it "feminine nightlife" Clubs are dying, but not because people hate going out. They hate going out to loud and expensive settings centered around alcohol. Similar adjacent trends: social saunas, teahouses, listening rooms, run clubs, supper clubs. Denmark is very good at this, btw.frozen4d ago3.6K26170131.32%

At almost every dinner I host, I meet someone who's built something remarkable I've never heard of. The problem? These people are incredibly hard to find because their networks rarely overlap. So we brute force it. People attend multiple events a day, hoping to meet the right people (I call this circuit networking). But AI is changing that. I can now organize my SF dinners from NYC with @HappenstanceAI. I connect my accounts, describe exactly who I want in the room, and it searches my network and my friends' networks to find people I'd forgotten about or never knew existed. Imagine doing that across NYC's entire talent pool. Which is why I'd bet on New York for the next ten years. SF has made its talent easy to find. AI could do the same for New York.16d ago3.4K3004131.13%

Some of the world's most successful people are building alternatives to high school and college for the most ambitious young people. High school: Founders School just opened in New York, backed by the team behind Alpha School. Tuition is $150K a year, and the promise is simple: graduate having built a business with $1M in profit, or you get a full refund. Right after graduation: Palantir's Meritocracy Fellowship. Four months, paid, and it ends in a full-time offer at a hyper-growth company. The first class took 22 fellows out of 500 applicants. They study Lincoln, Churchill, and Frederick Douglass, take improv to learn how to communicate, and visit Gettysburg. Instead of college: the Horowitz Andreessen Academy, launched this week. a16z put $35M into a one-year program in San Francisco for about 50 high school graduates, starting fall 2027. Tuition-free, plus $50K in compute credits and a $5K travel budget per student. Founding partners include OpenAI, Anthropic, Palantir, Stripe, and NVIDIA, who supply the mentors and the hiring pipeline. I wonder if this is the moment in time when the education system gets a much needed overhaul.frozen23d ago3.2K36761172.07%

OpenAI is paying >$400,000/year (plus equity) for a Head of Events. They want someone to set OpenAI's global events strategy and lead a large, established events and production team. The scope covers everything from flagship conferences and product launches to developer gatherings, executive programs, and regional events. In OpenAI's own words, the goal is connecting the people building AI with the people using it, and letting them experience the technology firsthand. Digital is more crowded than ever. Feeds are full of AI content. Inboxes are packed. The real opening now is in person. The companies that win the next decade will pair a great product with a strong presence in the room and a story people remember. If you build communities, the biggest AI companies in the world are betting on what you do.frozen28d ago3.2K2531031.00%

Every so often I find a product that genuinely amazes me. Like the first time I had the spicy rigatoni at Carbone and finally understood the hype. Last month I had that moment again, except this one saves me around $100K a year. I was about to hire a product manager for roughly that much. Then I realized a tool called @viktor_com was already doing the job. Every morning, before I’m even awake, it: - Filters the news down to what actually matters to me - Reads my emails, calendar, messages, and meeting notes for content ideas hiding in what I’m already doing - Scrapes the web for what’s trending in my space - And runs about a hundred other things in the background Then it hands me a short list of things to write about. My entire morning of work, done in minutes. But content is just where I started.  It’s also the project manager that keeps me and my team on track, pulling together what's due and what's waiting on me. It's the head of ops that connects my calendar with my inbox and my notes, And handle all the repetitive work. I used to lose hours too. The thing about Viktor is that it's not replacing my thinking. All the ideas, all the decisions and judgments are still mine. @viktor_com just gathers the information with the detailed context that no new employee would ever have on day one I recommend everyone who's running a business to try it. Try it below!frozen10d ago3.1K11270100.97%

It’s fascinating how the most important things in our lives are imaginary things that exist only because we all agree they do. Money is a number in a ledger. Nations are lines on a map that no one can see from the ground. Corporations are legal agreements. Laws are words we’ve collectively agreed to obey. Marriage is a promise made official by an institution we chose to recognize. And most status markers today are no different – degrees, job titles, Michelin stars, blue checkmarks. Everything is made up.frozen11d ago2.9K23110041.30%
The frightening thing about social media is that it's become our de facto third space. It's replaced the coffee shop, the bar, and the park. We now use it as a shittier substitute for human connection, scrolling to "bump" into people we know but aren't close to. Some stats that may blow your mind: 1. Americans spend 50% less time with friends in person than they did 20 years ago. 2. Young Americans spend 70% less time attending or hosting parties than in 2003. 3. The share of teenagers who say they're online almost constantly has nearly doubled in the past decade. Personally I don't believe the cure is to restrict screen time or phone habits. I think it's to encourage more in-person experiences.frozen7d ago2.9K1523130.82%

The people commenting "books" or "libraries" are wrong. We have two types of intelligence: 1. Crystallized intelligence: accumulated knowledge from learning facts, details, and things you read in books. 2. Fluid intelligence: the ability to reason, solve new problems, and generate new ideas from scratch. Books are good for the first. But AI isn't threatening what you know, it's threatening the work of thinking itself. Reasoning, judging, deciding. The things you train by producing, not consuming.frozen15d ago2.6K917070.93%

It's always been my dream to build my own custom board game. Like Monopoly, but reskinned for tech. So I talked to a dozen experts about design, sourcing, manufacturing, packaging, licensing, and procurement. They told me it would take a year to build and cost >$100,000. But I recently met the team at @Accio_official who helped me build a CUSTOM board game from scratch. It took me ONE month to do everything. We designed the full game concept, board, and rules, with the tech-world theme baked into every card Generated the artwork and visual design without hiring a separate illustrator or design studio Sourced the manufacturing and materials (everything from the board to the pieces to the packaging) Handled the production logistics that a dozen experts told me would take months Went from idea to a real, physical, playable game in about 30 DAYS! A year and $100,000, compressed into a month. It was pretty incredible. P.S. here's a video we made of the whole thingfrozen10d ago2.1K411010.34%
Eight executives asked me the same question last week: "Should I use AI to create content?" They're all worried their writing will sound like AI and harm their careers. The truth is that all the prolific writers I know use AI in SOME form. Here's my take: AI doesn't make your content unoriginal. Unoriginal ideas do. Writing is simply how you communicate your ideas. AI can help you organize those ideas, simplify your thinking, and make your writing EASIER to understand. But first, you need to write about ideas worth sharing. So where do good ideas come from? 1. Observations from your own experiences. 2. Lessons from things you've built, including your successes and failures. 3. Interesting concepts from books, podcasts, and essays that you've connected to your own experiences. 4. Opinions you've spent time thinking through, questioning, and challenging with other people. These are things AI can't experience for you. I use a tool called @stanleybystan to turn my ideas into writing that's easier to understand and formatted for platforms like LinkedIn and X. But the ideas ALWAYS start with me. In fact, I do most of my thinking in the shower – lights off, pitch black, music in the background (story for another time) The trap is outsourcing your thinking to AI. If you do that, no amount of clever writing or algorithm optimization will make your content interesting. The lesson: Use AI to improve your writing, not replace your thinking. The more you bring your own experiences and perspectives to your writing, the harder it becomes for anyone else to replicate. Try it below 👇frozen14d ago2.1K603130.63%

Hardest job at the table. – A founder who was on the founding team of a zoo – A VC who has owned 13 dogs – A CEO who once heard the spirit drum at an ayahuasca retreat.
